sir,
HO APR 1911
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your
letter No.1 and 3 of the 19th January and 17th February
respectively and to forward to Your Honour in reply a
copy of a despatch (with its enclosures) which I addressed
to the Secretary of State for the colonies on the 25th
ultimo.
2. I understand that you will yourself be in
England during the summer, and I hope that advantage may
be taken of your presence and that of Mr. Rees Davies
for a discussion with the Legal Advisers of the Foreign
Office and Colonial Office to arrive at a satisfactory
solution of this matter. I sincerely hope for my own
part that that solution while disposing of the legal
difficulties upon which I am not competent to express
any opinion of value, may secure the mutual co-operation
between the British Commercial interests of Hongkong and
Shanghai which as you are aware I have at heart, and that
there may eventuate out of the difficulties which have
arisen in regard to the registration of companies a solid
gain in the consolidation of British interests in the
Far East with their focus in this British Colony.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your Honour's most obedient
servant,
(sd.) F.D. Lugard.
Governor &c.
May
His Honour
Sir H. de SausmereZ.
Shanghai.
